Best of Wives and Best of Women

We’ve been listening to Hamilton as we roam around Italy. This little piece of American culture that can be sung, discussed and celebrated has been comforting. I’ve promised the kids we will see the musical live in London this September.

“I am not throwing away my shot,” yells Walker. “Who lives, who dies, who tells your story,” sings Jackson.

On this Mother’s Day, I get to celebrate 12 years of marriage to my partner, Lee Anne. Our first date was Valentine’s Day morning in 1999. She came over in sweatpants. I made pink heart shaped biscuits. She thought I was weird, but I knew she dug it. I was experimenting. My Mom had always made pink heart shaped biscuits on Valentine’s Day. Didn’t everyone do that?

We’ve been through it all in these past 19 years since we first dated. From parent health issues to losing a child, it has been a journey. I love and respect her more each year.

As we were listening to Hamilton I was thinking about my favorite line from the musical.

[ELIZA]
Alexander, go back to sleep
[HAMILTON]
I have an early meeting out of town
[ELIZA]
It’s still dark outside
[HAMILTON]
I know. I just need to write something down
[ELIZA]
Why do you write like you’re running out of time?
[HAMILTON]
Shhh
[ELIZA]
Come back to bed. That would be enough
[HAMILTON]
I’ll be back before you know I’m gone
[ELIZA]
Go back to sleep
[HAMILTON]
This meeting’s at dawn
[ELIZA]
Well, I’m going back to sleep
[HAMILTON]
Shhh
[HAMILTON]
Best of wives and best of women

Lee Anne has backed me in all my professional and personal journeys, seen virtue in my crazy ideas, exhibited patience when I showed up late and left early. Together we are raising two wonderful young boys. She truly is the best of wives and the best of women. Happy Anniversary, Lee Anne!
